Whether guests have a good or bad stay at a hotel, it has become pretty commonplace for people to share their experience via social media. Think pictures of kids on a waterslide, a half-eaten plate of spaghetti, or a rant about how the their room at a luxury tropical resort looked out over…a dumpster.

Local Measure compiled data from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to find out what guests most frequently post about. Culling from experiences shared by people staying at close to 300 properties in the United States, Asia, and Australia in a two-month time span patterns emerged as hotel experiences when it came to finding out who was sharing what.

Here are the top 5 most shared hotel experiences on Social Media –

1. Restaurants and Food

2. The bar and drinks

3. The views

4. Hotel room/amenities

5. The swimming pool

Somewhere down near the bottom of list were staff and hotel arrival. That stands to reason, since when you arrive at a hotel you typically just want to get to your room quickly. Plus, even if a staff member does something extraordinarily kind, it seems rather odd/inappropriate to take a photo of them and then post it up on social media.

Curious what experience in hotels came in dead last place?

The gym.

Does this list seem right to you, or did it miss the mark?

When hanging out at the bar and having drinks, there always seems to be someone with a cameraphone snapping away. It’s fun to capture and share the view from your hotel room, show what kind of amenity you received, and how big the hotel pool is.

Did I mention how amazing the food was that I enjoyed for room service at the Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet?

Looks like I already did, via social media.

Even though the study was only done for a few months and didn’t include a lot of places in the world, the list seems just about right to me. Everyone loves to take photos of their amazing meals because they are just so, so tasty and they want their cousin/brother/friend to see (hence the room service meal I enjoyed at the FS above).

  1. I’m totally guilty of sharing all of these… and more. It’s great to share your wonderful experiences with others. And when something goes wrong, posting helps the brands to fix the issue to repair their reputation.
