Norway is a beautiful country, but it can be expensive. Scandic Hotels currently has an interesting summer offer where you can stay 13 nights for a fixed 466 EUR (about 531 USD) per person, with over 70 properties to choose from.

Here are all of the major hotel chains with properties in Norway –

Ascend Collection
Best Western
Best Western Plus
Clarion
Comfort Inn
HTL
Independent Hotel
Park Inn
Quality Inn
Radisson Blu
Scandic
The Leading Hotels Of The World
Thon

Unless you are redeeming points at one of the chains above you may find that hotel prices in Norway this summer run upwards of 100 USD per night. Scandic is offering 13 hotel nights at the properties of your choice for a fixed price of 466 EUR x 2 with their Explore Norway promotion.

Here are the details of the offer –

You book the first night online for the entire fixed package price, which is paid upfront. The other 12 nights are booked via phone call center.

The stay period is between June 18 and August 27, 2015.

Properties participating are all the Scandic Hotels in Norway, with the exception of Scandic Kristiansand Bystranda, Scandic Dyreparken and partner hotels.

Children 12 and under stay for free in a parent’s room
Breakfast and Wifi are free

There are downsides to this promotion though. After looking carefully at the T&C, it says that the price is 466 EUR per person in a double room with no option for someone to travel solo. That means for a family of 3 (two adults, 1 child) you’ll actually be paying 1,062 USD total for the 13 nights.

Also, you don’t get to pick and choose the hotels over an extended period of time. The 13 nights must be consecutive, and there are no refunds if you don’t use them all.

If that still sounds interesting, use promotional code NOR when booking the first night online. You’ll be charged the full amount at the time of booking, and then you can ring their call center to make the other 12 nights of reservations.

How good of a deal is this? If using the sample best available rate of 99 EUR (about 112 USD) from the Scandic Oslo Airport for the random date of July 13-14 and multiplying that by 13 the total comes out to 1456 USD, which is already almost a 450 USD savings. Using the same sample date at the Scandic Bodø and assuming all the 13 nights at various hotels were the same price, the rate came to 143 USD so x13 = 1859 USD. Much better. Plus, even if there are lower web rates at Scandic Hotels they are usually not refundable either.

I think this starts as a great promotion, but there are a couple of points that need to be taken into consideration. If traveling around Norway you ideally want to spend two nights in one location, one in another, three in another, etc. The stay period between June 18 and August 27 is great, so it is too bad that you cannot space out your stay dates as long as they fit between that period. Jumping from place to place with one night in each hotel makes the promotion attractive. Then again, if Scandic’s target market for this is Americans it makes more sense because typical vacation time is squeezed into a single week or two.

I also don’t like the fact that the advertised “466 EUR for 13 nights” really means you have to pay a minimum of 922 EUR with two people required in the room. If you were allowed to travel solo without paying a single supplement fee then it would make this a steal. You can still maximize this promotion by finding out the rate for each night at the hotels you want to stay at and then add them all up before booking the Explore Norway package. Play around with it a little and you can probably squeeze out quite a bit of savings for your trip.

  1. This is actually a REALLY good deal, even for a solo traveler. I may consider returning to Norway if they offer this again next year.

    1. Robert, it’s always refreshing to see a program offering something like this deal and I hope for your sake Scandic runs it again next year!
