Residence Inn by Marriott did some research and found that more than 50% of frequent business travelers want to meet other people while at their hotel and enjoy the local setting without leaving the property. As a result Residence Inn Mix is being rolled out, the hotel’s newest social offering for guests that includes themed nights.

Three nights a week, Residence Inn properties are trying themed nights which they hope will give guests a chance to mingle and get a taste of local experiences without leaving the property.

Here’s the schedule –

The press release photo looks pretty cheesy in my opinion, but the most interesting part of all this to me has to do with Residence Inn’s partnership with Blippar.

Residence Inn has teamed up with visual discovery company Blippar to pilot image recognition and augmented reality. The program will first be rolled out this month in Boston, Austin, Los Angeles and Washington DC and then other properties quickly afterwards. In addition to the extended social hour events, guests will also be given special beverage coasters from Blippar that will allow them to play multi-player interactive trivia games, create selfies and learn about beers that pair well with the food.

Since just about everyone has a smart phone these days, this adds a new way for people to “mingle” with each other. I’m sure Residence Inn will use this as a test to see how the multimedia “mix” is received and used by guests.
