I received an email from Hotels.com with a flash sale coupon good for 10% off hotel bookings made by 11:59pm MT, December 20, 2016 for travel completed by April 15, 2017.

The coupon is intended for use with Price Guarantee hotels. Most major hotel chains are excluded from the coupon use, and note that Hotels.com Rewards won’t be earned on the booking with the coupon.

The reservation must also be prepaid, which is my least favorite type of hotel booking because plans tend to change and I like having the wiggle room of flexible reservations. If the savings are good enough and your plans are solid, this might be worth using.

Many of the major hotel chains and properties are excluded from the sale, but not all. I wrote recently about how these coupons can offer really good savings at Four Seasons and Hyatt properties.

Here’s a handy link to Hotels.com website.

Use coupon code EMLDF1016.

At first glance it seemed that it was an individual code issued for each user/email address so I was just going to give it to the first reader that wanted it.

However, in the Terms & Conditions the verbiage clarifies that the coupon code can be used for up to 20,000 bookings –

This coupon is only valid for the first 20,000 bookings made by all customers using this coupon. You’ll be able to check that it’s still valid before completing a booking. There’s a limit of one coupon per booking.

This means that the coupon can be used by lots of people, though restricted in the way that you cannot stack coupons if you have others.

Another interesting thing about this coupon is that it can be used to make up to 5 bookings, rather than just single-use. They just all have to be made by December 20th (or before 20,000 other bookings are made).

10% off isn’t a ton, but a coupon is a coupon and it does offer some savings.

Today is Day 6 of the 12 Days of Giveaways.

To enter today’s contest, leave a comment about online travel agency coupons like this one from Hotels.com. I’m curious if readers find them useful, if you rarely book with third-party agencies, or if you simply don’t find the savings worth the coupon use.

Good luck!

  1. No, I don’t use hotel aggregator site coupons. I like dealing with the hotel site itself, or Booking.com (which I also get 2miles/dollar if I go through the AA travel site).

  2. I have never been able to use a coupon. Possibly because I never book that far in advance. I will use Hotels.com, or Expedia (same ownership), or another third party booking site. Usually they work well when I am only booking a day in advance and usually for smaller independent hotels. I will do a search to see what deals are out there, but usually just end up paying whatever price seems most reasonable for a clean hotel with the location and amenities required.

  3. I’ve never used coupons for travel because I only see 10% discounts and most of time it’s for places I’m not going to. I do however use 3rd party sites if it’s cheaper than booking flights+hotels separately.

  4. I very seldom book thru a third party since I have had issues with bookings and cancellations when doing so. I usually book direct thru the hotel website.

  5. I use third party websites to help price guage and compare, but I mainly book direct with hotel. I feel more confident that way and I accure point and status.

  6. Usually I book directly on the hotel website using points or a 2for1 prepaid weekend rate. Occasionally I will book on booking.com because of the flexibility to change. I don’t use coupons.

  7. I rarely use third party websites for hotel bookings. I’m loyal (maybe to a fault!) to Marriott, so would much rather be able to earn points than save a few bucks.

  8. Almost all my bookings are done directly on the hotel website, using either points or my corporate rate when I can. I have only used a 3rd party booking site once, for an upcoming trip, so we’ll see how that turns out.

  9. I always book directly from the hotel’s website. I’ve had problems in the past with 3rd party sites. However, my son highly recommends coupons and 3rd party booking sites. Maybe a difference in generations…????

  10. It seems like most of the time I can’t find a coupon when I’m booking travel, or it isn’t applicable to what I want to book.

  11. Almost all of my hotel bookings are through the hotel website, using points. I have used Booking.com for locations that don’t have a “chain” presence, and will consider coupons (and portals) in the future.

  12. I rarely book with third-party agencies but sometimes do for a refundable rate at a nice discount. In general, I prefer to book directly on the hotel website.

  13. I would use the online coupon if I was needing a travel agency for a trip but generally my travel is much more casual.
