Thinking of visiting Ulaanbaatar? The luxury Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar has just opened in Mongolia’s capital and is kicking off their grand opening with special booking offers.

The new 28 story Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar has 290 guest rooms, which start at 450 square feet for lowest category Deluxe rooms and 900 square feet for lowest category Executive Suites. All rooms feature free wifi, and have large windows with a window seat for guests to sit on while gazing at the mountains in the distance. Views are either overlooking the Nayramdal Park or the Great Chinggis Khaan Square and the Government Square.

Choosing the random date of Friday June 26, 2015 I found that the best available rate including breakfast was 215 USD and the suite was 310 USD.

Using a date later in September without the promotional rates, the price didn’t shoot up much. I could also see that all room types except the Specialty Suite were available for Golden Circle point redemptions.

The hotel has club rooms but the club lounge called the Horizon Club Lounge situated on the 21st floor (top floor) is set to be open in July, and will offer breakfast along with drinks and canapés in the evenings.

Here are Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar’s opening offers and booking links –

Offer includes daily buffet breakfast at Cafe Park restaurant and late 3pm check-out. Note that dining credit cannot be used towards mini-bar purchases.

2. Golden Circle Special Offer – welcome amenities and double Golden Circle Award Points, for stays completed by August 31, 2015. Offer includes daily buffet breakfast at Cafe Park restaurant and late 3pm check-out.

In September 2014 a fire broke out in the hotel while it was under construction. Said to have started on the 7th floor, the fire quickly took over part of the building and a crowd gathered outside to watch as firefighters hurried to quench the flames. There were reports that the fire was due to an electrical wire, though that was not confirmed.

Thankfully, no one lost their life in the fire and there weren’t even any injuries after the quick evacuation. Construction continued and the property was able to open in the expected time frame.

Chinggis Khan International Airport is a 40 minute drive from Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar, and the train station is 20 minutes away. The hotel offers airport and train station transfer for a fee, which includes free wifi. Transfer requests must be made two days in advance and the price is not listed on the website but guests are asked to contact the hotel for details.

The hotel is connected to the Shangri-La Centre which has shopping, a fitness center, apartments and spaces for commercial use. The Shangri-La Centre will be fully open in 2016 but some areas have been opened already.

When it comes to food, Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar has a lobby lounge for light meals and drinks, an all-day dining restaurant named Cafe Park, and an outdoor pub and grill called Naadam that features the city’s best vodka menu. Coming in August will be a Chinese restaurant named Hutong. I was pleased to note that 24-hour room service is offered as well.

The onsite Health Club has a gym, sauna & steam rooms along with a Jacuzzi.

  1. This is hilarious. That hotel is a piece of garbage. I was having lunch last September in Ulaanbaatar when it caught fire. The unpreparedness of the city which does not have a proper fire engine was astounding and scary. There was literally a man with a garden hose trying to put out the fire.

The locals called it an inside job because the country is bankrupt and the investors weren’t going to recoup their $. My advice to anyone visiting UB is to skip UB for the countryside and save your money by avoiding this firetrap.

    1. Thanks for the backstory Alexander. I saw the photos and the fire looked pretty scary, especially if the fire department didn’t have proper equipment. Thank goodness no one was hurt!

  2. Not much of a promotion, and the rates are outrageously high.

But It says you can redeem a $240 room with only 3500 points???

We are planning on spending 5 nights in UB. If I can somehow acquire 15000 points with this hotel chain, we’d stay there. Do they have any transfer partners?

    1. Al, Golden Circle points can be transferred out to airline partners, but as far as I know they don’t transfer in. Rates for this property do look high especially considering the Kempinski for the same dates is $175. If you’re a Platinum card holder, Shangri-La properties are in American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program so you may find it worthwhile to book that way since you’d get breakfast included, possible room upgrade, late check-out etc. Doing a quick check it doesn’t look like they have been loaded in their system yet though since they are so new.
